| God Only Knows is at the Abbey Theatre from next Friday |
GOD Only Knows what audiences will make of the Company of Ten's next production at the Abbey Theatre in St Albans.
Hugh Whitmore's play God Only Knows is as intriguing as its title suggests.
It opens with four English holiday-makers in Tuscany having their meal interrupted by a stranger - dressed only in pyjamas and a bomber jacket.
He claims he has escaped from a mental hospital and is being hunted down by Vatican agents because he has knowledge that could threaten Christianity. For the next two hours, the four holiday makers have to decide whether he is mad, genuine or a criminal.
Ideas of all kinds are debated, some shocking and even blasphemous. All sorts of emotions - fear, panic, anger, bewilderment - assail the quartet before they reach some kind of conclusion.
Hugh Whitmore is a master at involving the audience in such debates and God Only Knows is no exception.
The production runs from next Friday, May 8, until May 16 and tickets are available from the Abbey Theatre box office on 01727 857861 or online at www.abbeytheatre.org.uk
ää Family support charity Home-Start will benefit from a performance of God Only Knows at 7.30pm next Thursday.
Traditionally the Company of Ten charity performance takes place the night before the play opens to the general public and tickets are £10 each, which includes a glass of wine or orange juice. They are available from Julie Bell on 01582 833789 or julie.bell@can-do.co.uk
