| The Linden Tree is at the Abbey Theatre Studio |
A THOUGHT-provoking play about life 60 years ago which contains many parallels to the present day is the next production by the Company of Ten.
The St Albans drama group is putting on The Linden Tree by J.B. Priestley in the Abbey Theatre Studio from next Friday, March 20, until March 29.
The Linden Tree is a family tree headed by a history professor in a dreary provincial city. His new boss wants him to retire, an idea to which he is totally opposed, unlike his wife who is desperate to get away and enjoy life in retirement.
The entire family gather to celebrate Professor Linden's 65the birthday but all does not go smoothly.
His wife and the siblings differ markedly in their lives and attitudes representing, as they do, various sections of society in post-war Labour Britain.
Rex is a wheeler-dealer, living it up in London while Jean is a dedicated doctor, very left wing and going through a crisis in her love affair.
Marion has escaped into the French aristocracy, hates Britain and finds comfort in her Catholic faith. The youngest is Dinah, still at university and full of hope and optimism.
The characters react on each other to create a thought-provoking play and tickets can be obtained from the Abbey Theatre box office on 01727 867861 or at www.abbeytheatre.org.uk.
