The Company of Ten are promising welcome relief from cold, grey and wet England at the Abbey Theatre in St Albans this month when young James Trotter sets off for America with his colourful new-found friends aboard a magic giant peach.

David Wood's dramatisation of Roald Dahl's classic story James and the Giant Peach begins when James, orphaned by a bizarre encounter between his parents and a rhinoceros, is sent off to live with his really horrible aunts Spiker and Sponge. Their names say it all.

James' luck changes suddenly when he is mysteriously given some very special magic which results in the sudden appearance of a giant peach.

He of course has to climb in to look inside the peach where he finds an endearing collection of remarkable and friendly insects.

Together they set out to sail across the Atlantic to New York where, after many strange and exciting adventures, they find true happiness.

The production runs from December 21 to January 5 and seats are now available from the box office on 01727 857861 and also via the web site www.abbeytheatre.org.uk
