ECHOES of Shakespeare's masterpiece Hamlet pervade Charlotte Jones' play Humble Boy, the next production by St Albans drama group, The Company of Ten.

But although Humble Boy is acknowledged to have been written as an expansion of modern rethinking of the themes of Hamlet, it is also a comic play in its own right.

It centres on Felix Humble, a troubled man who is unable to find the right course of action for his life.

He struggles to understand the actions of his mother and has shunned personal love to achieve his goals.

But unlike Hamlet, the play ends with the impression that Felix's life is able to take a new direction.

Humble Boy is full of relationships that do not conform to socially-acceptable preconceptions including a single mother who is proud not to have needed support from the father of her child and two long-standing relationships that have left the participants deeply dissatisfied.

It leaves the audience with the hope that even though no situation is perfect, relationships and families can turn out all right in the end.

Humble Boy, directed by Ian Rowe, can be seen at the Abbey Theatre at Westminster Lodge, St Albans, from Friday June 8, until Saturday June 16. Tickets can be obtained from the box office on 01727 857861.

A charity performance of Humble Boy is being held next Thursday June 7, with all proceeds going to The Prince's Trust to support its work locally.

Tickets are £10 - which includes a glass of wine - and are available from Sheila Lindsay, 24 Lindum Place, Verulam, St Albans AL3 4JJ or by contacting Steve Lindsay on 07775 544344.
