A STAGE adaptation of Stella Gibbons' best-selling novel Cold Comfort Farm is the next production by St Albans drama group, The Company of Ten.

The production, directed by David Goldman, opens tomorrow (Friday) at the Abbey Theatre in St Albans and runs until Saturday week, May 5.

It is the story of a young woman from London who, after the death of her parents, decides to move in with her aunt Ada Doom. She is a ferocious matriarch who presides over numerous grandchildren and a decaying farm.

David Goldman described the play as very funny, verbally and visually, and said it also presented a formidable challenge to the backstage crew to deliver the light, sound and effects the play demands.

He added: "But there is more to this play than just comedy. Behind the laughter at Flora's unquenchable optimism or Seth's rampant misogyny or Amos' anger at the sins of the world or Rennet's frustration or Ada's youthful trauma, there is a family locked in its own despair, denied fulfilment of their talents or ambitions or longings."

But, he added, by the time Flora and Charles had flown off into the sunset they had been released from that dark oblivion and sent off into a new dawn.

Tickets for Cold Comfort Farm can be obtained from the box office on 01727 857861.
