| A Doll's House |
Written in 1879 shortly after The Pillars of Society during Ibsen's self-imposed exile in Copenhagen, its success was immediate.
In its day it was seen as a startlingly-bold exposure of the hypocrisy and concealed struggle within a marriage but the play was also a reflection of wider society.
It was immediately denounced by the establishment as a degenerate attack on family values and by playgoers as a welcome liberation of the theatre from romantic delusion.
The legacy it has left is that Ibsen's humane, direct and naturalistic way of presenting his case marked the era of modern theatre.
A Doll's House can be seen in the Abbey Theatre Studio at 8pm from next Friday, October 13, until October 21. Tickets are available from the box office on 01727 857861 or via www.abbeytheatre.org.uk where you can download a booking form.
