PINOCCHIO, the puppet whose nose grows the more lies he tells, is the subject of the Company of Ten's Christmas show which starts next week.

The St Albans drama group has chosen the adaptation of the classic tale by John Morley, described as the doyen of pantomime writers, for the show which runs from Friday, December 16, to December 30 at the Abbey Theatre.

The story of Pinocchio was written in the late 19th century and since then has delighted audiences young and old. The John Morley adaptation has all the charms of the original with some darker aspects of "fairy tales".

The schoolboy puppet comes to life and is lured away to Funland where he becomes a donkey. He tells lies and grows an enormous nose, is rescued from a whale and finally becomes a real boy.

The colourful show includes dance routines from the Let's Dance School of Dancing in St Albans.

Tickets and performance times are available by calling the box office on 01727 857861.

Grace's Special Night - a Christmas tradition at the Company of Ten - is being held next Thursday, December 15.

It has been organised by Grace Hiscocks since the beginning of the 1980s - and Grace herself is now in her eighties - and it is an invitation to children and adults from either disadvantaged backgrounds or with mental and physical challenges, to come to a special charity night prior to the start of the Christmas show.

Among the groups which benefit are Scope in Harpenden, Mind, St Albans Junior PHAB and the Catholic Children's Society.

They are given interval refreshments and at the end of the performance, the cast come through to the foyer to meet the audience and sweets are passed around.
