Oh! What A Lovely War
THE dark humour and tragedy of World War One comes to the stage of the Abbey Theatre in St Albans next Wednesday when the Company of Ten begins an extended run of Oh! What A Lovely War.

Created by the ground-breaking Theatre Workshop in Stratford East and directed by Joan Littlewood, it was described by the New Statesman as "a production of the first importance in the history of post-war theatre in Britain".

It uses the light-hearted banter of pierrots appearing in an end-of-the-pier show to recreate the war.

Much of the dialogue is taken directly from documents of the period and all the well-known songs of war are there, including soldiers' ditties, popular hymns and songs sung with subversive lyrics.

A far from conventional play, it is funny and intensely moving with the humour and horror inextricably woven together. The Company of Ten's "Merry Roosters" are performing Oh! What A Lovely War - the Company's contribution to the St Albans Festival - from next Wednesday, June 28, until Saturday, July 8 with no performance on Monday, July 3. Tickets can be obtained from the box office on 01727 857861.
